Office 2012 We Never Really Got To Know Ya

Thursday, September 29, 2016

Tracey Capen
This Tuesday, Microsoft released the next Office, and in many ways it parallels the release of Windows 10.
Sharing is a new theme with Office 2016 but not the only one — colors return.
Chances are high that if you’re using Office 2013, it’s because you signed up for an Office 365 subscription. Having a perfectly good copy of Office 2010, and, like many others, not being a fan of the stark new UI, I relegated the 2013 version to one of my test systems.
For the daily work of getting the newsletter out, Office 2010 worked just fine; thank you very much.
But a large part of my job is looking at new Windows technology, and the easiest path to getting a peek at the new Office was via a subscription. Primarily, I wanted to see whether Microsoft made its productivity apps easier to view.
With a new Office subscription installed and running, I found the answer to be, not surprisingly, yes and no.
Office 2013 introduced the concept of UI themes in what seemed a half-hearted attempt to add some user customization. But it’s a feature I suspect most users simply ignored. Office 2016 has essentially the same set of background patterns, but adds a “Colorful” theme (see Figure 1), which on my new Office 365/2016 installation was set by default. (Office 2013 offered “Light Gray,” “Dark Gray,” and “White.”)

A Few Good Reasons To Upgrade From Win7 To Win10

Thursday, June 9, 2016

Lincoln Spector
By Lincoln Spector
That "Get Windows 10" icon sitting in Win7s notification area will get you a free upgrade, but you havent decided whether its worth taking the plunge.
For most Win8 users, upgrading is a virtual no-brainer; for Win7 users, however, the case is not so compelling. Here are a few enhancements that might tip the balance toward Win10.
We all know that Windows 7 is an excellent and firmly established operating system that has a familiar and fully functional Start menu. And for classic, non-touchscreen systems, Win10s new Start menu offers no real advantages over Win7s.
However, Windows 10 is far more than a revamped Start menu; it has numerous features that either dont exist in Win7 or have been significantly improved. Not all of these enhancements were introduced with Win10; some are familiar to Win8 users. But Win7 users can now get the latest Windows features for free — and never have to cope with Win8s "neither fish nor fowl" interface.
That said, Im not promoting the Win10 upgrade for all Windows 7 systems. In fact, Im writing this article on a PC thats still running Win7. My initial attempt to run Win10 on my production computer turned into a disaster of incompatibilities and BSoDs, as detailed in the Aug. 27 Top Story, "Thirty-day Win10 experiment lasts only a week."
There are also Win10s controversial — some say notorious — privacy issues to consider. For more on that topic, see the Sept. 10 LangaList Plus column (paid content).
To be fair, my Win10-upgrade nightmare ended just nine days after the OS was first released. Of course there were going to be problems — many of which have since been fixed.
Sometime in the relatively near future, I plan to purchase a new PC for work. When that happens, Ill be happy to have Windows 10 — for a variety of reasons. Here are five of them.
Task View: Get a quick glance at running apps
Managing and sorting through a bunch of open windows can get annoying. Win10s Task View gives you a clean, easy-to-see view of all of your open windows — including warnings and dialog boxes. The displayed boxes are smaller than the actual windows but bigger than icons or thumbnails (see Figure 1), so you can really see whats in them.............................................................................................

Old Lady Tries to Smuggle 44 iPhone 4s Through Airport Security in Her Stockings!

Monday, February 2, 2015

Old Lady Tries to Smuggle 44 iPhone 4s Through Airport Security in Her StockingsLast week, at Israels Ben-Gurion International Airport, security officials stopped a 60-year-old woman who had been moving erratically through airport security. She said she was feeling sick. Not true! She actually had 44 iPhone 4s stuffed down her pants.

According to Israel-based Hareetz:

Last weeks would-be smartphone smuggler was reportedly dressed in a traditional Georgian outfit and walking with difficulty, which drew the attention of customs officials. When they approached the Israeli woman, she claimed she was not feeling well.

They agreed to accompany her, but told her she must first pass through the full-body scanner. The officials were amazed to find that, under all the wrappings of the traditional dress, the woman had hidden no fewer than 44 iPhones in her stockings. She was later released and a decision will be made this week on whether to indict her or to send her before the committee that determines fines.

Apple iPhone sales to hit 46 5 million in Q4 says analyst iOS Unlock repair Dr Mobiles Limited 09 5515344

Iphone_5_lte_screenshot_diagonal_634x306x24_crop

Apple will enjoy a record-breaking quarter for iPhone sales in the run up to Christmas, an industry sage predicts, despite reports that manufacturing partners are struggling to meet the tech giant’s production targets.

In a note to investors, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu forecasts that total iPhone sales will soar to 46.5 million in the three months leading up to the festive period. That compares to a figure of 26.9 million for the preceding quarter.

Wu’s forecast will come as a tonic to shareholders after Foxconn’s Peter Gou this week told delegates at a business expo that challenges presented by the iPhone 5’s design meant that the company’s factories are struggling to keep up with demand.

Gou’s comments came after Apple’s share price recently dipped after revealing worse-than-expected iPad 3 sales.

However, according to Wu Apple’s production capacity is much improved since the iPhone 5 landed back in September, suggesting that perhaps other manufacturing partners, such as Pegatron of Taiwan, could be picking up the slack.

Gou did not specify what particular problems are affecting production of the iPhone 5, but is thought that these relate to the handset’s alleged tendency to pick up scratches.

The worst thing to happen to your Apple iPhone 4S liquid or water damage repair iOS rescue help insurance claims Auckland

The following article forwarded to me by an Apple iPhone 4S user, it was the result of his research concerning iPhone 4S liquid damage repair and tips. He had accidentally wet his spanking Apple iPhone 4S not so long ago.  See what he has to say....

iphoneWith the advent of the electronic age, everyone’s had water damage to a device at some point or another. Yet when it happens to an iPhone, it’s absolutely devastating. It’s your worst nightmare. Panic, tears, and yelling don’t help at all, but what will?

I didn’t think it would ever happen to me, as I’m always ultra-careful, although it seemed to happen to my teenage son every few months. One time he dropped his phone in his bowl of cereal, and another time it was in the kitchen sink. The inevitable finally happened to me one day when I was out with friends and my purse got knocked off the sink in the restroom, flipped over, and my iPhone slipped out of the pocket it was in and literally jumped into the toilet.

The iPhone had been completely submerged, so I knew it was water-damaged. It worked at first, then turned off, and I could literally see the water inside it. I knew it was cashed. I was camping, so didn’t have anything with me to try the tried-and-true methods of preventing water damage. The next morning it was still wet inside and while it turned on and off, the touchpad didn’t work at all, and neither did the Home button. It was because of all this that I learned what to do when your iPhone gets water damage.

Apple-Care program Doesn’t Work

Apple does not cover water damage in either their one-year warranty or their Apple-Care program. They want to make sure they aren’t covering that either, so have placed sensors on the phone to detect water damage. There is one inside the headphone port, another in the charger connector on the bottom, and a few more hidden inside as well. The sensors will turn half pink/half white with water damage. Some people have been known to put tiny little pieces of white paper over the sensors to cover the ones on the outside, but there isn’t anything you can do to hide the two internal ones.

Solutions

The first thing you need to do is turn the iPhone off and disconnect it from any possible power sources. The next step is to place it in an airtight Ziploc bag with silica gel packets if not uncooked rice.  You should immediately start searching for a proper or reuptable repair centre to inspect your water/liquid damage iPhone 4S.  Remember, the longer you wait to get it repair, the worse it will get -- as fungus will grow, corrosion start damaging the internal part of your Apple iPhone 4S.  There will be physical change start to take place as moisture will warp or alter the shape of your main circuitboard or motherboard.

Walk-in-service-summary
Professional Repair Centre

Search the internet for a reputable or indepent repair centre who will help you out.  Please note that the real-pro will not charge you outrages inspection fee ($45 up to $85, non-refundable) at all as they not rip off people for heftpy or unrealistic "inspection fee". You should conduct indepth research about water damage repair centre, on google, facebook about any possible reliable centre in your area.  Water damage Apple iPhone 4S usually have 50/50 chance of being repair.
Be careful of those semi-pro who do not have any office phone line or those that do not have a real physical address

The Last Draw

If you liquid damaged iPhone 4S cannot be repair, you can file for a lost through your home content insurance.  Take note on the excess fee that you have to pay the insurance company before filing for a claim.
Any decent repair centre will not ask your an insurance damage report (some dubious operator charge you up to $85 per report).  The reason being that professional repair centre earn profits via professional repair job awarded to them from insurance company. So the more free inspection they do, the more business they will get from those big insurance company.

Latest App News 2012 Microsoft Office app coming to iPhone iPad and Android in 2013 Dr Mobiles Limited

Thursday, January 29, 2015

Microsoft_office_for_ipad_placeholder_520x300x24_fill

Microsoft is developing a much rumoured, much anticipated Mobile Office suite for iOS and Android, reports have confirmed.

According to “several sources close to Microsoft’s plans”, the software giant is hard at work in bringing its Word, PowePoint and Excel applications to the rival platforms, despite claims that it might decide to shun them to give its own Windows Phone operating system a competitive advantage.

Microsoft has already told The Verge that the news is in fact true, stating: “Office will work across Windows Phone, iOS and Android."

A press release from its Czech Republic arm confirmed that Office for iOS app will be available from March 2013, followed by an Android app in May. Users will require a Microsoft account for access to a read-only version of the app and a Microsoft 365 subscription for editing functionality.

SkyDrive integration for synchronising and accessing files over cloud is also expected.

What remains unknown is whether this will be a scaled back mobile edition or full-fledged software that features the sort of advanced capabilities available on the desktop applications. In any case, the news should be boon for iFans and Fandroids who like to work on the move.

GBA4iOS, the Game Boy Advance emulator games on iPhone, iPod and iPad should indeed return to iOS. While the update iOS 8.1 Apple left little chance of survival with clogged faults, the developer of the emulator has announced a new method allowed to enjoy the games without jailbreak.

Riley Testut behind the project and the emulator has announced that the first open beta stamped GBA4iOS 2.1 is now available for download. In order to take advantage of Game Boy Advance games, however, it will go through a company certificate, a method that can be daunting one given the latest news from Attack Mask (read: wire lurker virus that threatens iOS).

To prove his good faith, Riley Testut released the source code for the program that we can take a look and / or install everything manually. Finally, once out of its beta phase, GBA4iOS 2.1 will be published on Cydia for jailbroken devices users to enjoy.

Hugo Ortega is off to Redmond

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

Tonight I can hardly sleep – although my body is screaming for me to hit the sack! Tomorrow I am heading to the International Terminal and borading a United Airlines plane bound for the mothership…Redmond. I’m sure most of you are aware that Redmond, Seattle, USA, is the homeland of Microsoft Corporation. I am extremley excited as I will have back-to-back meetings and conferences with the Tablet PC Team and many more.

The reason for my visit is to attend the Microsoft MVP Summit. This event is designed to bring together the dudes making the cogs turn, globally, on a non-renumerated basis. Well, they might be paid by there own means but these are the guys that are not employed in any way, shape or form by Microsoft Proper. As you know I became an MVP late last year so it is truly exciting to be getting on that plane, especially when you consider that the event is held every 18-months, and Bill Gates wont be around for the next one.

Have I ever been to Seattle? Yes. I was there in 1993 representing Australia in Basketball. We played 20 games over 22 days, and got our butts very kicked a long the way. :-) Have I ever been to the Microsoft Campus? No. I have never been and to be honest up until 2005 I didn’t even know it existed. What I liken the feeling to is that level of anticipation and aspiration that I felt the first time I went to Disney Land - as a 9 year old. The reason it feels similar is that the shear thought of visiting the heart of the mity empire named Microsoft also congers feelings of bliss, happiness, joy, excitement and definitley awakens the inner-geek in me.

So from me to you I wish you the best this year and hope that the journeys I go on somehow also empower you. I know that I am a little behind on Vlogs but it is just an inevitable result of the amount of growth I am going through right now. Ideally I will be sitting with several key players in the Tablet space and beyond. If I get the chance I will Vlog in some shape or form. If I don’t I will surely post photos and thoughts.

Till then…take care! BTW, Tuesday morning I have a 2hr sessions with Bill Gates, including audience Question and Answer. OMG! What should I ask him?

Im off to China Beijing

Monday, January 19, 2015

I’m off to CHINA on Wednesday! Now I have known about this for over a week and due to my many NDAs was not able to tell you guys! I have been invited as a special guest to attend some Windows Vista Labs in Beijing China. OH MY GOD! Not only have I never been to China, The Great Wall, or eaten Real Peking Duck, but this will also be my first “real” Microsoft Event, i.e. anything other than one TechEd I went to, once (you get my point).

As one of only 25 MVPs & community leaders selected globally for this event I am honored and will do my best to represent you guys there, i.e. beat them to a pulp regarding Tablet PC and Ultra-Mobile PC related questions. The hosts, Microsoft Beijing, have invited members of the Official Vista Team from Redmond for us to rub shoulders with and for this I am very excited. PLEASE submit any burning questions you might have as this is not about me but about you. I can only imagine that I was selected because undoubteably I’ll VLOG about the event, and, I’ll actually get your questions answered; so do not hestitate.

Regrettably not all my 5 day stay is about Microsoft Windows Vista. I have decided to take my Samsung Q1B and take him to the Great Wall of China! I promise lots of photos and even a video of me and whatever Tablet I have with me at the time, at the top of the Great Wall. Thanks for all your support guys, you Rock!

If you’re feeling a little green do not read further. If however you know I’m in it for you, and not me, then read on…my intinerery for my 1.5 days off is as follows:

Lenovo shows OEMs how to talk Tablet

Friday, January 16, 2015

Recently I posted about opening discussions with Lenovo, with an intention to help expand their Tablet PC branding here in Australia and assist their own team of resellers in better comprehending the power that is “ink.” I’ve since exposed their X41 to congregations of Tablet enthusiasts and oodles of Tablet newcomers.

While their X41 is fairly conservative (read: old-school) in the looks department, it is a surefire winner when in the hands of a Tablet PC virgin. Even though its looks lack any of the “Shock and Awe” tactics displayed during the recent Iraq conflict, they do facilitate a Tablet first-timer in easily accepting Tablet PC as a conventional form factor; I strongly believe the Motion and Sahara Slates are sex on PCB but also admit that sometimes they seem to intimidate, rather than impress.

Upon approaching Lenovo one quality that was evident from an early stage was their eagerness to target the end-user. They greeted my proposal with the usual OEM apprehensiveness, but managed to move on quickly and issue me with an X41 to play with - thanks mostly to Lenovo BDM, Greg Hunt . I would like to note that it’s not only a show of support witnissed by “Australia’s Tablet Guy” (me) but one also witnessed by Australian Podcast Royalty, Cameron Riley – admitting in a recent podcast we recorded together on "The Productivity Show" that he too has been issued an X41 to trial. (Don’t call your nearest Lenovo representative just yet, remember Cameron and I have lots of leverage)

Tonight while checking in on my mate Rob Bushway, via his GottaBeMobile.com Blog, I saw him pointing to this Lenovo Television Commercial (that hed ripped on his MCE PC). For those of you living in the United States you may wonder if it was really worth blogging about. What you may not realize however is that life does exist outside of your country; for those of us living in any other country outside of the United States we know only too well that life outside of the United States of America is nothing but “delay-time.” We’ll frequently receive product, information, news and reviews only too often after the fact. One example of the effect this has on non-American’s is the way we watch television, and moreover advertising. Even with all my energies tied up in Tablet PC I have yet to see a Television commercial in Australia that purely marketed Tablet PC; so when Rob posted this commercial, screened during the series of 24 on Fox, I just couldn’t help but link to it!

Enjoy Aussies and Kiwis!!!

Good job Rob, the effort is appreciated Downunder!

Looking Forward to CES 2011

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Right now a lot of people are waiting anxiously for the 2011 edition of the big Consumer Electronics Show. In recent years, the show has been pared down a bit by the exclusivity of many announcements made by companies at their own events. However, this year with the boon of the tablet market in 2010 and so many companies hoping to get off to a strong start in 2011, I’m expecting quite the laundry list of interesting news out of the US in a couple weeks.

I’ve already mentioned the potential announcements that Microsoft has up its sleeve. No one is entirely sure if Ballmer will show off a revamped Windows 7 or if he has something entirely new on the docket. One thing is certain, though. After 2010’s CES, he needs to come out swinging and show off an OS that will truly compete with iOS, the upcoming Honeycomb from Android and possibly even RIM’s Playbook OS, all expected sometime  in spring/summer 2011. I love Windows, but I just don’t think it can compete with the touch-oriented operating systems that everyone else is working with right now.

But, then we have Intel’s recently released documents showing that many major manufacturers including Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Fujitsu, and Asus are all working on Windows tablets for release in 2011. It will be interesting to see what comes of all these new projects and how many of them we will see at CES 2011.

We’re also seeing some snippets of news leak out from a variety of companies that will likely be announcing new products at CES. A Sony device recently won FCC approval for Bluetooth and Wireless connectivity as a tablet – not much is known about the device yet, but it looks to be a hefty device both in size and specifications. We won’t know for sure until January.

Other known announcements we will see include a Motorola Honeycomb tablet (likely with 4G) recently teased at in an internal event for the company. The new device has been referred to as the Everest and Motorola is already whipping out the quips against Apple’s iPad Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and their pared down computing experiences. Will we get to see exactly what kind of horsepower the Honeycomb tablet OS actually holds or will Google continue to hold back details further into the year?

And then there is everyone else. NEC is slated to show their dual screen tablet, while Notion Ink will hopefully give everyone a chance to actually lay hands on the Adam and ensure it is in fact the real deal. And there are always surprises. If 2010 was the year of the tablet, CES 2011 looks to be the celebration with almost every major consumer electronics company in the world bringing its A-game to Las Vegas.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Towards the end of the year, a lot of reviews and reviews about smartphones this year. However, the most interesting is how Android continues to dominate the smartphone market. Quoting from bloomberg.com, according to Eric Schmidt (Google Chairman), Google Inc.s Android. (GOOG) still beat the greatness of Apple Inc. (AAPL) in the mobile application market when compared to what have experienced by Microsoft Corp.. (MSFT) currently dominate the desktop software in 1990.

Speaking during an interview session at Bloomberg headquarters in New York, Eric Schmidt confirmed that the explosion in demand for Android smartphones helped Google to continue to dominate the market compared to other software providers. Even Android dominate 72% in the third quarter with an activation of 1.3 million devices while Apple only got 14% only. If the past 20 years the fight just happened about Microsoft versus Apple, Android is now only able to bring great change to win the fight unanimously.

Schmidt explained how Google attract users and advertisers to trust in the devices used and turned away from traditional computers. By presenting Android, Google provides revenue to the partner hardware makers like Samsung for example. The sacrifice was not in vain because it is done for the purpose of profit from advertising and internet services. Core strategy is finally making a larger profit. Another strategy, Google did not make the full control and there are no full advantage with an open OS goodness.
